In today’s world, where everybody is running behind the prized degree of MBA, the phrase ” why should you not do an MBA’ surely comes as a surprise. But if we think deeply, it has some value. Ok, let’s think it in this way — does MBA fit into my own personal career dreams? Will an MBA degree help me in achieving whatever I want in my future life?

If the answer to the above questions is yes, then we should not think twice and go ahead and try for an MBA degree. But what When the answer is a straight “no,” or a more dicey “perhaps, but am not so sure.” It is then that you should sit and think as to what are the reasons why you should not do an MBA.

It is true that no matter how well you understand that you do not actually need an MBA degree to pursue your personal career goals, it is extremely difficult to get away from the enchanting world of management degrees; here are certain points which you can think about:

The basic things that an MBA degree won’t teach you:

1) MBA programs are designed to help you in managing your economy, but they do not help generate cash flow for your business.

2) MBA training cannot help you in acquiring empathy. A first-rate business school will teach you how to run organizations and individuals competently, but they cannot tutor on how to understand people and their psychology.

3) No MBA program can make you a leader; it can only polish your leadership skills, if you have them in you.

4) It is not that business schools don’t teach business ethics, but it is surely a tough job to categorize certain things as strictly wrong or certain other things as right. That has to be learnt by ourselves and determine according to the situation and the circumstances.

5) There is no training in the world that can handle risks for you. MBA programs can only guide you in dealing with a broad category of risks but practical experience would teach you more.

Therefore, it is always advisable to take some time and think hard what actually you want to become and consider the fact that in spite of all the hype about MBA and the related high-paying jobs, there are other field of expertise and career also, such as that of medical and legal profession, chartered accountancy, teaching, and so forth, which can take you to your desired goal of a good career as well as enrich your distinct attributes and qualities. Moreover, it is also pertinent to think whether you can actually invest so much money for a degree, since an MBA degree from any reputed institution would cost a lot. It is also good to analyze your own capabilities and interests and evaluate the fact whether you are capable of putting that much effort which any good MBA institution would expect from its students.

Finally do not jump into the bandwagon. Do not do an MBA degree simply because your peers are doing it. Rather think calmly and analyze if you need to do an MBA degree and then go ahead. Analyze your long term career goal. Who do you want to be known as in future? What are your long term goals? Based on all these facts go ahead and get that required MBA degree as it will allow you to progress at a fast forward pace in your career.
